First, people like feeling right. They can be biased in favor of their existing views.

Second, beliefs serve as social currency. Whether they are aware of it or not, people are attracted to views that can bring them social connection.

Third, it’s hard for people to acknowledge that even if they already know a lot, they don’t have the complete picture.

While these motivations can lead to closed mindedness, by carefully channeling them you can get a new audience to listen to what you have to say.
